Carson articulates YouTube as a mirror that reflects one’s own experiences and thoughts in other people’s stories. One can recognize oneself in others, and this can diminish feelings of solitude and alienation and reassure the viewer that there are others “out there” like them. Vlogging becomes a way to not “transition in a vacuum,” as Carson notes, highlighting the interactive or interrelational dimension of the mirroring effect of the vlogs. What Carson seems to suggest is the importance of feedback, and of having one’s own image reflected back in various and supportive ways:

Because I do think there is a part of going through transition that is adolescent and you do need to have other people out there holding a mirror up to you and saying, yeah, you look great and you’re doing OK, you’re changing and we love you even if your parents don’t [laughing while saying the last part].
